Commentaires : C'est avec ce spectacle que Sam Mendes a commencé son rôle, exceptionnel, de directeur artistique au Donmar Warehouse. Il a fait ressortir le côté humour noir et brillant de l'œuvre et l'a ainsi sauvée de l'opprobe critique qui l'avait accablée lors de la créatiojn américaine. La chanson "Something Just Broke" a été ajoutée dans cette production.
The original workshop production took place off-Broadway in January 1991 to a limited sold-out run, greeted variously as “a lethally brilliant musical” and “an aimless project”, but generally regarded as a bit of a flop. The London version was only slightly re-written and included an extra song - “Something Just Broke”.
It, too, was a total sell out, but this time received almost nothing but praise, and won the Critics Circle London Drama Award as the Best Musical.

Commentaires : Le spectacle a alors été créé sous le nom de "Wise Guys" et cette série devait déboucher sur Broadway: une date en avril avait même été avancée. Un théatre était réservé et le décor construit. Sondheim lui-même écrivit un article dans le NY Times pour annoncer l'arrivée de Wise Guys. Mais ce workshop au New York Workshop, avec Nathan Lane et Victor Garber dans les rôles principaux, ne s'est pas révélé satisfaisant. Sondehim et Weidman n'aimaient pas le résultat et les producteurs pensaient qu'il fallait encore travailler au spectacle. Beaucoup pensère qu'il en était fini de 'Wise Guys'. Les vraies causes de cette débacle étaient nombreuses. Certains prétendirent que a faute en incombait à Sam Mendes dont la vision du spectacle était opposée à celle de Sondheim et Weidman.

Commentaires : Mendes' conception was a very different show than either the original production or the rather conventional first revival. The most significant change was the character of the Emcee. The role, as played by Joel Grey, in both prior incarnations, was an asexual, malevolent character in a tuxedo with rouged cheeks. Alan Cumming's portrayal was highly sexualized, wearing suspenders (i.e. braces) around his crotch and red paint on his nipples. The cabaret number "Two Ladies" was staged with the Emcee, a cabaret girl, and a cabaret boy in drag and included a shadow play simulating various sexual positions. The score was entirely re-orchestrated, utilizing synthesizer effects and expanding the stage band, with all the instruments now being played by the cabaret girls and boys. The brutally satiric "Sitting Pretty", with its mocking references to deprivation, despair and hunger, was eliminated entirely, as it had been in the film version, and replaced with "Money". "I Don't Care Much", which was cut from the original production, was reinstated, and "Mein Herr" and "Maybe This Time", written for the film adaptation, were added to the score. Staging details differed as well; instead of "Tomorrow Belongs To Me" being performed by a male choir, the Emcee plays a recording of a boy soprano singing it. Most dramatic of all was in the final scene in which the Emcee removes his outer clothes to reveal a striped suit of the type worn by the internees in concentration camps on which were pinned a yellow badge (identifying a Jewish prisoner) and a pink triangle (denoting a homosexual prisoner). Other changes included added references to Cliff's bisexuality, including a brief scene where he kisses one of the Cabaret boys.

Pour cette première production, Stage Entertainment France relève son défi avec succès, celui de présenter en France, avec une équipe française, un musical aux standards de Broadway. Ce n’est certainement pas dans ces colonnes que l’on doutera du vivier de talents que l’on peut trouver en France mais en tout cas, Cabaret prouvera aux sceptiques que le théâtre musical parisien a de belles heures devant lui, reste à espérer que le public répondra à l’appel.

The Ferryman became the fastest-selling show in the history of London's Royal Court Theatre and, following a sold-out run at the venue in spring 2017, the epic drama - both in concept and scale - transferred to the Gielgud Theatre for a twice-extended run in the West End and continued to garner critical acclaim and a plethora of accolades, including the Olivier Award for "Best New Play".

Although The Ferryman is laced with the intricacies of the political unrest of the 1980's in Northern Ireland - a time referred to as 'The Troubles' - no prior background knowledge is necessary to feel moved by this exquisitely written portrait of a family in crisis. The play's central themes of love, loss, and grief will resonate with you, no matter where you're from and no matter what your background. The family in question is the Carney family and we join them at their rural farmhouse as they are about to celebrate the annual harvest. But as this multi-generational, extended family gather together, secrets of the past are unearthed in a living tapestry of lies, betrayals and hidden truths.

As has become somewhat of a signature for Jez Butterworth, whose previous Broadway credits include the Tony-nominated masterpiece Jerusalem and the Hugh Jackman-led three-hander The River, The Ferryman is at times lyrical and mystical in its writing, drawing inspiration from Irish mythology. This element is anchored by the character of Aunt Maggie Far Away, who drifts in and out of dementia to regale younger members of the family with stories of old and prophecies for the future. She even forewarns of the fate of the Carney family, as the figurative tidal wave moves ever closer to the farmhouse by the play's conclusion.

With a huge ensemble cast - that also includes babies, rabbits and geese - all the pieces of this extraordinary puzzle receive their moment in the spotlight and come together with a pace that creeps up on the audience, catching us off-guard at every twist and turn. So many of Butterworth's characters are relatable - even in their extreme views or circumstances. You understand their pain, their motivations and their searing loss. After 3 hours and 15 minutes - which all too tellingly fly by - you feel a part of this family, inextricably woven together.

Commentaires : Cameron Mackintosh was happy to subsidise this new and very different piece of political satire with its rock music/vaudeville/country and western score, but was allegedly furious at the dismissive critical reaction, claiming London critics were too blinkered to accept anything new and progressive. The critics considered it comic-strip melodrama, with its Kennedy-esque satire grossly overdone and so full of cynicism that not one single character could involve the audience’s sympathy or interest. However, there was praise for the music and lyrics, and some suggestions that Dempsey and Rowe could be future talents to watch.

Commentaires : Although based on the 1994 Palladium production, some new dance sequences were created and the Palladium prologue was removed. The show now opened, as it originally did in 1960, with the workhouse children entering, singing “Food Glorious Food”. The roles of Nancy and Oliver were cast via another BBC reality TV series. When Rowan Atkinson fell ill in April 2009, Russ Abbot took over for three months, after which Fagin was played by Omid Djalili. In December 2009, Griff Rhys Jones took over for six months, with Russ Abbot returning for another six months. Even before opening night, the show had broken all box-office records at Drury Lane (doubtless due to the TV publicity). For the final month, Griff Rhys Jones returned to see show to its triumphant end on January 8 th , 2011.
